The Rhode Island State Census

If you have Rhode Island ancestors, run don't walk to your nearest LDS branch library and check out the state census. The Rhode Island state census covers eight different census years between 1865 and 1935 and is particularly rich in genealogically significant data. Perhaps the key state census year is 1885 because there is no federal data available for 1890. Unfortunately there is no 1895 data, but Rhode Island did pick up again in 1905. The 1905 edition is interesting and unique in that the data was recorded on cards rather than the large tables we're used to. The 1905 data includes important data such as parent birthplaces, but the microfilmed copies of the census cards are arranged by sex. In other words, males and females are listed on different films. This makes it inconvenient to view data on an entire family. It is worth the effort though to have the odd year data to supplement the federal census.
