Five Years for CensusTools!

Time flies. It's been five years now since I created my first census spreadsheet after finally getting fed up with trying to record census data in commercial genealogy software. After distributing hundreds of copies of the spreadsheet in response to e-mail requests, I created the CensusTools website in May 2001. The pace at my drawing board has slowed down considerably in the past year, but I intend to keep the website up and running for as long as researchers still drop by to load up on my creations.

As much as I would like to create a bunch of new tools, my military career is keeping me too busy. I have a few ideas I will file away for the day next year when I retire and have more time. There are a few loose ends I have tie up. With the increased availability of what's left of the 1890 census, I will add a page to my federal collection. I also need to add a 1911 worksheet to the Canadian collection. I will announce those additions in a future mailing or newsletter.

I received an interesting e-mail from a researcher last month who proposed the idea of building a database using CensusTools spreadsheets as source documents. Such a database would allow the data to be fully searchable and could provide for customized reports. If the idea comes to fruition you will be the first to know.
