A Review of Genealogy Magazines - The NEGHS Register |
The New England Historical and Genealogical RegisterQuick FactsPublication Schedule: Quarterly Price: $75 yearly for membership to NEHGS, which includes online databases and access to 150 years of the Register. Pages: Various by issue between approx. 70-100 MiscellaneousThe Register is published to last for decades in a subscriber's collection. Each issue is printed on high quality paper and very well bound. Most other genealogy magazines are printed on relatively cheap glossy paper. NEGHS obviously knows that serious researchers won't discard this publication as would be the case with the typical genealogical monthly. ReviewFor anyone with New England ancestors, the NEHGS Register will almost certainly assist in documenting their family history. As the oldest geneqalogical journal in the world, the Register has earned a reputation over the last 160 years as a premier source of authoritative genealogies. Using the January 2006 issue as a typical example, there were eight articles detailing one or more generations of New England families from the 16th through 19th centuries. Each article is painstakingly referenced and footnoted. This particular issue also includes an editorial detailing the process by which the Register editors review articles submitted by researchers. I have been lucky enough to make a connection to a genealogy published in an old issue of the Register. Especially in these days of very questionable genealogies available online, the Register is one of very few family history sources I will import at face value. ConclusionA subscription to NEGHS isn't cheap, but then again, there's no substitute for quality. There are many other benefits to membership which can be viewed here. |
